Description
My thanks to Hugh Vandervoort at www.pmp-art.com for the reference photograph.
The osprey (pandion haliaetus), sometimes known as the fish eagle, or seahawk, is a medium-sized raptor found on every continent except Antarctica. With a wingspan up to 71 inches and 24 inches in length, the osprey nests near any body of water with a good supply of fish.
Pairs usually mate for life and the average lifespan is 7-10 years, although the oldest wild European osprey was known to have reached over 30 years of age.
This magnificent male has spotted a fish from perhaps 100 feet above the surface, before hovering briefly and plunging feet-first to grab his prey with specially adapted talons. His dense, oily plumage quickly sheds water and once airborne again he adjusts the fish to a head-first position for aerodynamic efficiency in flight.
This original pencil drawing was made with Faber Castell Polychromos and Caran d'Ache Luminance pencils on Clairefontaine Pastelmat paper.
